The first settlers who came to the area were Mormons, but they left the area when their church had problems with polygamy. The settlers who came after the Mormons had problems with land ownership. The settlers came together as one large group to form a settlement. The name Las Vegas comes from the Spanish name of a nearby spring.
A group of Mormon settlers was relocated to this area. This group was called the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. These settlers were looking for a place to settle. They settled near what was known as Las Vegas Springs. They built this fort to protect themselves from attacks from the natives. The fort was surrounded by three square miles of land. The settlers began to build homes inside the fort, and a town was born. The settlers lived peacefully for over 30 years.
